What is drainage rate?

Drainage rate describes how quickly water passes through a turf product or tested surface assembly, usually under stated laboratory conditions. It does not by itself describe how quickly an installed yard can absorb and discharge water.

Also called: flow rate, water permeability, drainage capacity

Why it matters

The slowest or blocked part of the system can control performance. Turf, seams, infill, base, subgrade, slope, drains, and the outlet all need to work together.

How it is used

Manufacturers publish product drainage figures, while installers evaluate existing grades, soil, runoff, low points, and the destination of water after it enters the base.

The money question

How can it affect project cost?

The number itself does not determine price. Correcting standing water, regrading, stabilizing soil, installing drains, or building a more deliberate base can add site-specific cost.

  • Comparing figures with different units or test conditions
  • Believing a high carpet rate fixes a bad subgrade
  • Ignoring runoff from roofs, slopes, or neighboring areas

Questions to ask an installer or supplier

  • What part of the system was tested for this drainage claim?
  • Where will site water go after entering the base?
  • Does the proposal include correction of existing drainage problems?
