Pet Turf vs Standard Landscape Turf
Pet turf is not one standardized product category. The meaningful difference is whether the complete system has been deliberately selected and installed for concentrated animal use, rinsing, drainage, seam protection, edge security, and cleaning.
Option one
Pet-focused system
Prioritizes cleanability, a documented drainage path, durable seams and edges, pet-suitable infill when appropriate, and a maintenance routine matched to the number and size of animals.
Option two
Appearance-focused landscape system
May prioritize lawn realism, softness, color, and ordinary household traffic. It can still work for some pets, but the backing and installation should be evaluated rather than assumed suitable.
How to decide
Tell the installer how many animals will use the area, where they usually toilet, whether water is available for rinsing, and where that water can go. Compare the exact assemblies—not just labels or swatches.

- Pet TurfPet turf is an artificial-grass product or complete installation system selected for areas used by animals. The label is not a single standard: practical performance depends on backing, drainage, seams, edges, infill, base, cleaning access, and maintenance.
- Pet InfillPet infill is an infill product marketed for artificial-grass areas used by animals. It may be selected for moisture handling, ammonia adsorption, cleanability, or reduced compaction, but performance varies and maintenance remains necessary.
- Drainage RateDrainage rate describes how quickly water passes through a turf product or tested surface assembly, usually under stated laboratory conditions. It does not by itself describe how quickly an installed yard can absorb and discharge water.
- Fully Permeable BackingFully permeable backing is designed to let water pass through a broad portion of the turf backing rather than primarily through spaced drainage holes. Actual installed drainage still depends on infill, base, subgrade, slope, and a discharge path.
