Artificial Grass Drainage: Problems, Solutions, and Cost
This is one of the project facts Artificial Grass Shopper asks before producing a planning estimate.
What we ask
Does the area drain now—and where will water go after it passes through the turf?
Artificial grass can pass water through its backing, but the complete installation still needs suitable grading, a permeable base, a stable subgrade, and somewhere for that water to discharge. Turf alone cannot repair an existing puddle or drainage problem.
How it affects price
Does this change the quote?
Potentially direct. A standard permeable base may be part of an ordinary installation, while regrading, unstable-soil correction, drain installation, channel work, waterproofing coordination, or repair of standing water can add site-specific labor and materials. Pet areas may also require a more deliberate, cleanable drainage path rather than a product labeled only as pet turf.
How to evaluate it
- What goes under artificial grass matters: the turf backing, infill, aggregate base, prepared subgrade, slope, and final discharge route must function as one drainage system.
- Diagnose puddles, slow-draining soil, low spots, runoff from roofs or hardscape, and irrigation leaks before covering the area; hidden water problems generally become harder to inspect afterward.
- For dogs, confirm that urine and rinse water can travel through the entire system to a suitable outlet and that the maintenance plan matches the number of pets and intensity of use.
Ask the salesperson
- Please show me where water goes through each layer and where it ultimately leaves the installation area.
- Does the price include correcting existing puddles, grading problems, unstable soil, or concentrated runoff—and how will that correction be verified?
- Which drains, channels, waterproofing details, pet-area measures, or other drainage work would require a separate quote or change order?
