What surface must be removed before artificial grass installation?
Natural lawn, bare soil, concrete, pavers, decks, waterproof membranes, and old artificial turf each require a different removal, disposal, drainage, attachment, and base-preparation plan.
How it affects price

Direct and sometimes substantial. Lawn and soil projects may require excavation, hauling, disposal, grading, and a new permeable base. Concrete may remain when its condition, drainage, elevations, and attachment method are suitable—or require costly demolition when they are not. Pavers, decks, membranes, and old turf introduce their own removal, repair, protection, and rebuilding requirements.
How to evaluate it
- For lawn or soil, document the excavation depth, estimated disposal volume, grading work, base thickness, and who pays weight-based dump charges.
- For concrete, pavers, decks, or membranes, confirm what remains, what is removed, how drainage will work, and how the turf will be attached without trapping water or damaging the structure.
- For old artificial turf, identify whether the base can be reused, which defects must be corrected, and whether removal, infill containment, hauling, dump fees, and cleanup are included.

- What exactly will be removed, to what depth, and how was that quantity calculated?
- Are excavation, hauling, weight-based dump fees, site protection, and final cleanup included?
- Which hidden conditions or unsuitable surfaces would trigger a change order, and how would it be priced?
