What is complete drainage-path verification?

Complete drainage-path verification follows water through the installed landscape—from surface flow and turf backing through infill and base to a functioning drain, outlet, or approved destination. It evaluates the assembled site rather than relying on a turf-backing laboratory number.

Drainage is a complete path: water must enter the assembly, move through or across it, and reach a destination that can accept the flow.

Why it matters

A highly permeable turf sample cannot overcome a clogged infill, dense base, low spot, undersized drain, saturated subgrade, or outlet with nowhere to discharge. Homeowners need to know both how water enters the system and where it ultimately goes.

How it is used

The designer documents grades, infiltration assumptions, subsurface conveyance, drains, and discharge points. During construction, concealed drainage is photographed and elevations are checked. At completion, the installer applies water in sensitive locations, observes surface, vertical, and lateral movement, and confirms that outlets function without creating a new problem elsewhere.

A simple section and plan can connect grades, turf, base, drainage components, low points, and final outlets into one understandable system before construction hides the critical details.

Ask for: Ask the contractor to trace surface, vertical, and lateral flow and name the final destination rather than pointing only to backing perforations.

Keep in mind: A drawing documents intent, not capacity or completed workmanship. Local stormwater rules and downstream conditions may require qualified design review.

Concealed-drainage record

Dated photographs with measurements can preserve drain locations, elevations, connections, aggregate envelopes, and accessible cleanouts for later maintenance or diagnosis.

Ask for: Ask for overview and close-up photographs tied to fixed property features, plus the product and size of major drainage components.

Keep in mind: Photographs do not prove slope, hydraulic capacity, correct connection, long-term soil behavior, or compliance with local discharge requirements.

Useful at completion under safe, project-appropriate flow conditions

Witnessed finished-system demonstration

Applied water can expose ponding, unexpected surface migration, blocked transitions, slow infiltration, leaking connections, or an outlet that fails to discharge as planned.

Ask for: Ask to witness checks at representative areas, seams, low points, hardscape transitions, drains, and the final outlet before closing the project.

Keep in mind: A hose demonstration is not automatically an ASTM test and may not simulate design rainfall, saturated soil, frozen ground, extreme storms, or downstream backup.

The money question

How can it affect project cost?

Simple witnessed demonstrations may be included. Formal field testing, engineered drainage, catch basins, trench drains, drainage boards, pipe, difficult outlets, or correction of poor native soil can materially increase cost. The appropriate level depends on rainfall, soil, slope, regulations, and consequences of failure.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the turf backing's laboratory drainage rate as an installed-yard result
  • Designing infiltration without checking the native soil or downstream capacity
  • Installing drains without identifying an accessible, lawful discharge destination
  • Testing only the easiest high point instead of seams, transitions, low areas, and outlets

  • Please show me the complete route water will take through and away from this project.
  • Which site, soil, rainfall, and outlet conditions informed the drainage design?
  • Which concealed drainage features will be documented before they are covered?
  • How will we demonstrate the completed system in sensitive locations before acceptance?
