Why it matters
Artificial grass follows the surface below it. Small imperfections can become visible under short-pile turf and especially on putting greens, while poor grade or inconsistent compaction may contribute to movement, ponding, settlement, or an uneven feel. The finish course should refine a properly designed structural base—not disguise a weak one.
How it is used
The contractor builds the specified aggregate depth in controlled lifts, establishes drainage grades, compacts and verifies the supporting layers, then refines the upper surface with a compatible finish material when the design calls for one. Screeding, rolling, hand finishing, and straightedge or elevation checks are used to remove local defects before turf is placed. Fine screenings are one possible material, not a universal half-inch recipe.

Grade and outlet check
Elevation, laser, stringline, or witnessed-water checks can confirm that the prepared surface follows the intended slopes and connects low areas to the drainage path rather than merely looking flat.
Ask for: Ask the contractor to identify high points, low points, flow direction, drains, and outlets, then show how the prepared grade matches the design before it is covered.
Keep in mind: A surface-level check does not establish subgrade stability, aggregate depth, compaction, underground drainage capacity, or how the complete system will perform in an extreme storm.
Planarity and defect review
A straightedge, screed, repeated visual sighting, or project-appropriate tolerance check can expose localized ridges, depressions, abrupt transitions, and footprints before they telegraph through the finished turf.
Ask for: Ask what smoothness tolerance is appropriate for the intended use and request correction of visible or measurable local defects before the turf is rolled into place.
Keep in mind: Planarity means a consistently shaped surface, not necessarily a level one. Turf areas often require deliberate slope, contours, crowns, or breaks to drain and perform as designed.
Layer and compaction record
Photos, delivery records, lift depths, equipment notes, and project-appropriate density or proof checks can document work that will become impossible to inspect after the turf is installed.
Ask for: Ask which layers and checkpoints will be photographed or tested, and request the results before authorizing the contractor to conceal the base.
Keep in mind: A firmness reading taken on the finished turf does not by itself prove aggregate depth or compaction. Verification methods and acceptance criteria must fit the specified materials and project.
The money question
How can it affect project cost?
Excavation depth, haul-off, aggregate availability, access, drainage infrastructure, compaction equipment, fine grading, and specialized performance tolerances influence cost. Putting surfaces and very short pile generally demand more exact finishing than a casual landscape lawn.
Common mistakes
- Using a thin finish layer to hide an unstable or poorly compacted structural base
- Creating a smooth surface without confirming that water still reaches an intended outlet
- Assuming fine granite screenings always remain permeable in every gradation and compacted condition
- Checking only the overall slope while missing localized humps, depressions, or soft areas
Questions to ask an installer or supplier
- What are the specified base layers, thicknesses, materials, and compaction procedure for this site?
- How will you verify grade, local smoothness, and drainage before the turf covers the base?
- If a fine finish course is proposed, what material and thickness will be used and why is it compatible with the drainage design?
- Which construction records or demonstrations will I receive before final acceptance?
