What is decomposed granite?

Decomposed granite is weathered granite broken into small particles and fines. Some regional turf installers use specified products as part of a compacted base, but the name alone does not establish gradation, stability, or drainage performance.

Materials sold under the same everyday name can behave differently. A base needs a defined source, particle distribution, compacted depth, and installation method appropriate to the site.

It may be placed and compacted in lifts, sometimes as part of a layered base or finishing course. Suitability depends on local material, soil, climate, drainage, and project use.

How can it affect project cost?

Local availability, hauling distance, excavation depth, quantity, access, and compaction labor influence cost. It should not be priced or approved from the words decomposed granite alone.
