Why it matters
The edge is where raw backing, loose cuts, weeds, trip points, lifting, and movement often become visible first. A deliberate border detail helps the surface look finished and gives the installer a stable place to secure or terminate the system without pretending that one fastening technique fits every project.
How it is used
The installer identifies every transition, selects compatible and durable edging or anchoring materials, establishes the finished elevation, follows smooth curves, cuts the turf accurately, and secures the edge according to the turf-system and site design. Tucking the backing into a purpose-built recess can conceal a raw edge in some assemblies, while a flush cut or attached edge is more appropriate in others.

Transition schedule
A marked plan or proposal can identify the intended finish at concrete, planting beds, walls, steps, drains, and open edges so the crew does not improvise important transitions during cutting.
Ask for: Ask the installer to name the edge or anchoring method at each transition and show how the finished height, appearance, and water path will work together.
Keep in mind: A named material does not prove the detail is suitable. Soil, climate, loading, drainage, turf-system instructions, and adjacent construction affect the final choice.
Curve and cut inspection
Reviewing the edge before infill can reveal flat spots, kinks, scallops, exposed backing, inconsistent offsets, or cuts that leave too much or too little material at the border.
Ask for: Ask to inspect the shaped border from several steps back before the final edge is concealed and before infill makes corrective cutting more difficult.
Keep in mind: Heating or scoring a particular composite board may damage it or void its instructions. Bending methods must come from the selected edging manufacturer, not a generic rule.
Perimeter security walk-through
A hands-on review can identify loose sections, trip lips, sharp or exposed components, blocked drainage transitions, and places where the backing remains visible from normal viewpoints.
Ask for: Ask the installer to demonstrate the completed edge system and explain how any accessible fastening, tucked detail, or unattached transition is intended to perform.
Keep in mind: Fastener length, spacing, and angle are system- and site-specific. More spikes are not automatically better, and fastening alone is not a substitute for specified infill or ballast.
The money question
How can it affect project cost?
Long perimeters, tight curves, elevation changes, custom headers, trench drains, and difficult hardscape transitions add material and skilled labor. Composite edging can avoid some decay concerns associated with wood, but product, fastening, thermal movement, soil, and loading still need to be considered.
Common mistakes
- Leaving exposed backing or an uneven raw cut beside visible hardscape
- Using an edge material or fastener that is incompatible with the site conditions
- Forcing a flexible board into kinked curves instead of establishing a smooth layout
- Specifying a one-inch tuck or a particular spike angle as a universal requirement
Questions to ask an installer or supplier
- What edge detail will be used at each hardscape, planting bed, wall, and drain transition?
- How will the finished elevation avoid a raised lip, exposed backing, or drainage obstruction?
- Which edging and fasteners are specified, and how do they accommodate local conditions and temperature movement?
- May I see the perimeter and curve details before the turf is installed?
