Artificial Grass Shopper

Artificial grass term

What is artificial grass?

Artificial grass is a manufactured surface of synthetic fibers tufted into a backing and installed with supporting materials such as base aggregate, edging, seams, and often infill. The visible turf is only one part of the finished system.

Also called: synthetic grass, synthetic lawn, artificial turf

Artificial grass performs as a complete surface system, not as carpet alone.

Why it matters

Homeowners often compare samples as if the carpet alone determines the outcome. Drainage, base preparation, seam layout, edge restraint, infill, workmanship, and maintenance all affect how the installation looks and performs.

How it is used

Landscape systems can serve lawns, pet areas, pool surrounds, play spaces, rooftops, and putting greens. Each use places different demands on fiber construction, backing, drainage, surface firmness, heat planning, and maintenance.

The money question

How can it affect project cost?

The chosen turf affects material cost, but preparation and installation commonly make up a substantial part of the installed price. A lower-priced roll does not necessarily create a lower total when the site requires more preparation or specialty work.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing from color alone without reviewing the full system
  • Comparing carpet prices with complete installed proposals
  • Assuming every turf product is suitable for every use

Questions to ask an installer or supplier

  • Which exact product and complete installation assembly are included?
  • How will the base, drainage, seams, edges, and infill be handled?
  • What maintenance and warranty documents will I receive?
