Why it matters
Infill can add ballast, support fibers, influence feel, and help control movement or thermal dimensional change. Uneven dumping, wet material, insufficient brushing, or an improvised blend can leave streaks, buried blades, exposed granules, inconsistent support, and performance that differs across the yard.
How it is used
The installer confirms the product, quantity, application rate, and equipment specified for the turf and intended use. Dry infill is spread evenly in multiple applications rather than one heavy pile, then brushed or dragged between lifts so material settles without trapping fibers. A final cross-direction grooming and inspection redistributes localized excess and presents a uniform surface. Multiple infill types may be used only when the complete system supports that design.

Performance checks worth asking about
Material and quantity reconciliation
Product labels, delivered bag count, area, target application rate, and unused material can be compared to confirm what was installed and whether the quantity is reasonably consistent with the written specification.
Ask for: Ask for the infill name, specification, planned pounds per square foot, total quantity, and explanation of any meaningful difference between the plan and actual use.
Keep in mind: Bag count alone cannot prove uniform depth or correct placement. Waste, partial bags, moisture, field conditions, and product-specific tolerances must be considered.
Lift-by-lift observation
Watching multiple light applications with brushing between them can confirm that material is being worked into the system progressively rather than left in piles or forced through matted fibers at the end.
Ask for: Ask how the crew will keep infill dry, spread it evenly, protect nearby surfaces, and follow the turf manufacturer's required brushing or grooming procedure.
Keep in mind: A power broom is not automatically appropriate for every product or stage. Brush stiffness, direction, machine setting, fiber type, and system instructions all matter.
Finished-surface consistency review
Cross-direction visual and hands-on inspection can reveal stripes, localized excess, visible granules, flattened or trapped fibers, inconsistent support, and edges or seams that received different treatment.
Ask for: Ask for a final grooming walk-through in ordinary daylight and instructions for any follow-up brushing or redistribution expected after the surface begins to settle.
Keep in mind: A neat appearance does not verify antimicrobial performance, odor control, long-term compaction, heat behavior, chemistry, or suitability for pets; those require separate evidence and maintenance.
The money question
How can it affect project cost?
Material type, required pounds per square foot, antimicrobial or coated products, access, dust-control needs, application equipment, and grooming labor affect price. Decorative color, odor-control claims, or layered blends should be evaluated for measurable function and compatibility rather than appearance alone.
Common mistakes
- Depositing the full infill quantity in one heavy pass
- Applying damp infill that clumps instead of distributing evenly
- Using grooming equipment or direction that conflicts with the turf manufacturer's instructions
- Assuming every antimicrobial, coated, or dark-colored infill can be layered into every turf system
Questions to ask an installer or supplier
- Which infill product, application rate, and total quantity are specified for this turf and use?
- How many application lifts will be used, and how will the surface be brushed between them?
- Are multiple infills proposed, and where does the turf-system documentation support that combination?
- How will you check for streaks, exposed granules, trapped fibers, and uneven coverage before acceptance?
