Face Weight vs Total Weight
Face weight counts the turf yarn above the backing. Total weight includes the finished product’s yarn and backing components. The figures answer different questions, so they should never be compared as though they use the same measurement basis.
Option one
Face weight
Useful for comparing how much yarn is present above the backing when measurement methods are consistent. It still needs pile height, density, fiber construction, intended use, and performance context.
Option two
Total weight
Describes more of the finished product, but the backing contribution can make the number look larger without adding visible yarn. It is useful for product description and handling—not as a universal quality score.
How to decide
Ask for both figures and a complete specification. Compare products intended for the same use, then handle the samples, inspect recovery and density, review backing and tuft bind, and read the warranty. Neither highest number automatically wins.

More material can affect manufacturing cost, but neither measurement has a fixed relationship to installed price. Preparation, labor, backing, distribution, warranty, and seller positioning also affect the proposal.

- Face WeightFace weight is the weight of the turf yarn above the backing, usually expressed per square yard. It does not include the primary or secondary backing and should not be confused with total product weight.
- Total WeightTotal weight is the finished weight of an artificial-grass product, including yarn and backing components. Because sellers may label weight specifications differently, the stated basis should be confirmed before comparing products.
- Pile HeightPile height is the measured length of an artificial-grass fiber from the backing surface to the fiber tip. It describes blade length—not density, softness, durability, or overall quality by itself.
- Turf BackingTurf backing is the layered material that carries and secures artificial-grass fibers. Primary backing supports tufting; a secondary coating helps lock fibers in place and contributes to dimensional stability and drainage design.
