When will the artificial grass receive direct sun or concentrated reflected heat?
Artificial grass can become uncomfortably hot in direct sun. Air temperature alone does not predict the surface temperature, and concentrated reflections from energy-efficient windows, glass railings, light walls, or metal can create much more intense local exposure.

Usually an indirect product-selection and operating consideration, but mitigation can affect project cost. Shade structures, awnings, landscape changes, window treatments, specialized turf or infill, irrigation or misting, and other site modifications require separate evaluation. Cooling performance varies with weather, product, infill, maintenance, shade, and test method; no questionnaire or product name can promise a universally safe surface temperature.
How to evaluate it
- Identify who will use the area—especially children, pets, and barefoot users—and observe which portions receive sun during the hottest hours and seasons. Plan how access will be restricted whenever the surface is too hot.
- Check nearby low-emissivity windows, glass railings, light-colored walls, metal, and other reflective surfaces at different times of day; concentrated reflected sunlight can create localized heat and may affect turf or surrounding materials.
- Treat cool turf, cooling infill, and temperature-reduction claims as product-specific claims. Ask for the test conditions, comparison surface, duration, maintenance state, and whether the warranty covers your sun and reflected-heat exposure.

- What temperature evidence supports this exact turf-and-infill system, under conditions comparable to my climate, sun exposure, and intended use?
- What hot-weather operating plan is recommended for children, pets, and barefoot use, and does it require shade, water, special infill care, or access restrictions?
- Could reflected heat from nearby glass or walls damage this turf or void coverage, and which prevention work is included in the proposal?
